Grand Final
Deadline: 2nd May 9pm
(2) harry_ftw v aurix (1)
aerowalk 47:11 | soylent 33:32
harry_ftw came into this match with two lives, meaning aurix had to win both best of 3's to come away with victory. In the end, however, we only needed the first 2 maps. A cointoss meant harry_ftw's map was to be played first, and he chose to play aerowalk (out of his two maps). And he got off to a flyer, his 2nd frag being one of the best of the tournament. Gaining control at 2-2 he was able to really put a lead in, and though at times aurix looked like he would be able to come back, harry_ftw juts kept pushing and pushing until he had amassed the score you see above. aurix then picked soylent, and with their last match on this map going his way most of us were bunkering down for a long night of spectating. This match was close throughout, neither player really able to get a big lot of control, the lead swaying between each player to a maximum of 5. With harry_ftw ahead by 3 at the death it looked as though aurix was gone, but 2 quick frags and he had 15 seconds to force overtime. However, he was unable to pick up health and then find harry_ftw in the time left and we had our victor in harry_ftw.
Champion - harry_ftw
Runner Up - aurix
3rd rabs
4th TrevNacho
5th MDWGUNS
5th Charmander
7th Cuinnton
7th kaepora_gaebora
It was a fun tournament, particularly from the start of finals onwards, and thanks to everyone for playing. I look forward to the next Xonotic Australia run Medley Season 2 for more exciting tourney action! Thanks again, nostraRABS out.
Losers Bracket Final and Winners Bracket Final Review

Sorry for the lateness of this, just had mid sesssion test week! But you get two decider match reviews, so it should make up for it :P.
Losers Bracket Final
Deadline: 25th April 9pm
(1) aurix v rabs (3)
stormkeep2 15:17 | final_rage 24:17 | UseAndAbuse 24:19 (OT)
With the cointoss we headed to aurix's picked map, stormkeep2. Neither player was really able to get on top in this match, with the lead staying within a magnitude of 4 frags. Both players were able to steal control away from the other with some clever hunting and mega stealing, and it was rabs who was able to have a sufficient lead at the death to hold on and take the map. final_rage was the map that followed, and aurix was in a do or die situation for the second week in a row. He was able to demolish rabs for the first 5 minutes, taking the scoreline to 10-0 with great control, and leaving rabs little hope of a comeback. Following the inverse of a normal nexuiz duel, the rest of the match was fairly close, neither player able to dominate for an extended period of time. And so we had another decider, aurix's cointoss leading to him eliminating warfare, while rabs eliminated bloodprison. This led to use and abuse being played, and it was another great match. Fast starting aurix was once again on show, as he jumped out to a little lead. rabs then clawed back a few frags, and it was even at the halfway mark. rabs then got a little bit of control, taking himself out to something of a lead, and with 3 minutes remaining he was on top. But it wasn't to be, as aurix climbed back into contention with some quick frags, taking a 1 frag lead with seconds to go, before rabs forced it to overtime. Overtime was a bit of a showcase, with aurix taking control and dominating for the full 2 minutes, rabs unable to get into the game. It was a great game, and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Winners Bracket Final
(1) aurix v harry_ftw (2)
aggressor 22:29 | soylent 35:19 | warfare 19:33
A much anticipated showdown between these two players, who as far as I know had never dueled before. With harry_ftw now used to his arm in a cast the game was scheduled for last sunday night, and we ended up with aggressor as the first map. harry_ftw was expected to take this out, but early on aurix showed he was determined not to let this happen. The two swapped control for the first 10 minutes, neither really getting out to a massive advantage, until as always seems to happen in nexuiz, harry_ftw got on a big spree towards the end, unleashing 14 unaswered frags to put the result beyond doubt. aurix was able to get a few back near the end, meaning harry_ftw didn't have quite as much momentum going into the second map. aurix's map was next, and in a do or die situation he really pulled through, making sure harry_ftw was never truly in the contest with some great control and aim. Taking the momentum into the decider was going to be really important, and with bloodprison and dismemberment eliminated it was time for warfare. In a similar pattern to aggressor, harry_ftw and aurix swapped control throughout the first ten minutes. This time however harry_ftw's late rampage was cut short, with aurix able to come back to within 4 frags with only 2 minutes remaining. This is when the adrenalin really kicked in and harry_ftw went on a near-perfect two minutes, taking the result as well as the key 2 lives into the grand final.
Losers Bracket Preliminary Final

Week 3 Review
12 Apr 2010, courtesy of rabs
The two losers bracket semi finals were played out this week, with the 3v6 and 4v5 matches switched around.
Losers Bracket Week 2
(5) Trev v Charmander (6)
aerowalk 19:10 | use and abuse 12:13 | stormkeep2 7:2
Played immediately after Trev's loss to aurix, it kept a big night of matches pumping. Both players were playing on Charmanders computers, as Trev had to borrow one for the match. Charmanders map was played first, but unfortunately for him Trev was able to take control in the second half of the map (as so often happens) and run a way with a lead. At this point Charmander was being written off by most spectators. He then showed us all up with a great start on use and abuse, jumping to an early lead that put Trev under pressure for the entirety of the 15 minutes. Charm was able to use his lead effectively and keep Trev's late charge at bay to take this match to a decider. As warfare and bloodprison were eliminated we visited stormkeep2 for a very tight match. Neither player was able to get on top as they both stacked and avoided fighting for the first 10 minutes, leading to one of the lowest scoring matches since viscous. But Trev's late charge once more showed up, and he was able to get 5 frags in a row, with Charm having some unfortunate lava mishaps. It was a great match, well played to both players.
(3) rabs v MDWGUNS (4)
aerowalk 20:9 | final_rage 31:-5
Played at the deadline time, aerowalk was played first for the second time. MDWGUNS got off to a great start, taking the score to 2:-2 in the first couple of minutes, and when rabs was finally able to get back to 0 he had a 5 frag lead. But that was where rabs was able to take a bit of control on the map, and soon scores were even. The middle 5 minutes was a tight struggle, neither player really on top, before rabs took it away with a couple of big streaks in the last 5 minutes to take the victory. final_rage was rabsies map, and a reasonably dominant performance followed, in which he did not die. This put rabs through to the preliminary final against Trev, to see which pride player would make the losers bracket final.
Duel Bracket Week 2
5 Apr 2010, courtesy of rabs
The second week of the duel finals threw up some intriguing battles, and they delivered some very close matches. It was thrilling to watch all week, definitely a great advertisement for Australian Nexuiz.
Winners Bracket Round 2
(1) aurix v Trev (5)
dismemberment 26:23 | final_rage 38:9
The last match to be played in the week, aurix and trev was a much hyped match. Unfortunately, the Xonotic Australia servers were suffering, and each player had about 50 grater ping than normal. The first map, dismemberment was the map Trev had to win to force it to a decider, but he didn't get off to the greatest of starts, succumbing to an early lead. He fought back valiantly, and from the 5 minute mark this match swayed from lead to lead, neither player getting away from the other. Finally, aurix was able to get a quick spree in the dying moments to take the map. final_rage was the next map, and as one of aurix's favourites it was never going to be easy for trev. aurix started well, and continued his dominance with some great nex and MG use throughout the 15 minutes, never letting Trev into the game. He finished up with a deserving win and a passage into the Winners Bracket final.
(2) harry_ftw v rabs (3)
final_rage 19:18 | aggressor 31:3
harry_ftw v rabs was another much billed match to be played. The first map, final_rage, was rabs' best shot to cause an upset, and it proved to be incredibly close. rabs lead through most of the early stages, but neither player could really assert dominance over the other and take a big control spree. This led to some incredibly tense gameplay, finishing with rabs in control unable to get that one last frag to take it to overtime. Unfortunately the second map was marred by lag and some amazing gameplay from harry_ftw, finishing slightly early. This set up a much vaunted aurix v harry_ftw winners bracket final showdown.
Losers Bracket Round 1
(6) Charmander v cuinnton (8)
toxic 18:14 (OT) | warfare 15:14
The first map to be played in the week was the closest on both maps, with one overtime map and the second decided by a frag. Both players were very even, and neither was able to get out to a considerable lead. On toxic it was cuinnton who started the better with an early lead, but he wasn't able to put the match in the bag as Charmander kept hounding him, edging back into the contest. He finally gained a lead late before cuinnton was able to reassert himself and take another lead. We then went into overtime as Charmander was able to get 3 quick frags to all but finish the match in his favour. It was a similar story on warfare as cuinnton jumped to an early lead, forcing Charmander to again come back from the dead to edge his way, frag by frag into a good position. He was finally able to take the lead with some control over the last few minutes, and ended up playing a run and hide game to secure the victory, and a place in Week 2 of the losers bracket.

Winners Bracket Round 1 Review
28 Mar 2010, courtesy of rabs
Round 1 of the Winners Bracket has finished. The 4 winners remain in the Winners bracket, while the four losers move to the Losers Bracket. It was quite an interesting round, and I think will whet everyones appetite for some really close matches next week, particularly in the winners bracket. Here is what happened over the last week:
(1) aurix v Cuinnton (8)
final_rage 39:12 | toxic 29:9
Unfortunately I didn't get to see this match, so NO REVIEW FOR YOU GUYS.
(4) MDWGUNS v Trev (5)
aerowalk 9:20 | dismemberment 2:28
Despite not seeing the first map of this game, I'm going to REVIEW IT ANYWAY. Apparently it was ridiculously close for the first half of the match, before Trev was able to get away from MDWGUNS and take victory. ICE MAN promptly stopped spectating and probably watched over guns' shoulder. dismemberment is Trev's map, and as we've come to know and love he displayed his usual incredible map knowledge. Unfortunately for MDWGUNS he couldn't compete on this map, thereby not forcing a decider.
(3) rabs v Charmander (6)
warfare 28:6 | aggressor 15:9
The first in a double header on monday night, rabs played Charmander. The first map was aggressor, and through the warmup both players realised they were going to have retarded ping in at least some portions of the map. And so it was, with control switching from player to player on a map neither is renowned for, rabs ending up getting the better of the sprees to move out to a 6 frag lead late in the game, a lead never relinquished. warfare followed, and rabs was able to get slightly more control over this map, using nex and stacking effectively.
(2) harry_ftw v kaepora (7)
final_rage 45:3 | soylent 38:20
The second match of this double header saw harry_ftw play kaepora. With everyone giving kaep no chance, he sprung a surprise on the first map soylent by skipping out to a 5-0 frag lead. harry_ftw took some time to get into his stride, but as the map progressed he was able to build stronger and stronger leads, without ever really getting an extended period of control. The next map, final_rage showed harry_ftw's versatility, where he destroyed kaep over the first ten minutes with impeccable control and prediction.
And so we enter the Second week of the Duel Bracket Finals. (1) aurix will play (5) Trev, while (2) harry_ftw will play (3) rabs in the Winners Bracket. In the losers bracket, (8) cuinnton will play (6) Charmander, while (4) MDWGUNS will play (7) kaepora in a rematch of their group stage game.
Group Stage Review
15 Mar 2010, courtesy of rabs
And so the Duel Stages come to a close. It was an interesting few weeks, some groups finishing all their matches (A) while others completed just 1 (D). As the Duel finals start after the CTF Final I'm expecting every match to be played. Duelists who have made the finals are expected to tell me their selected map by 10pm on the 21st of March. The deadline for your first round match is the 28th of March, you will see a Double Elimination Bracket on the site by the 21st of March. Here is how the seedings and matches have played out:
- (1) aurix v Cuinnton (8)
- (2) harry_ftw v kaepora gaebora (7)
- (3) rabs v Charmander (6)
- (4) Trev v MDWGUNS (5)
Should be some classic matches from here to the final. These are the final standings in each group:
Group A
- 9 harry_ftw +84
- 6 Trev +109
- 3 Ling -112
- 0 Hew -81
Group B
- 9 aurix +134

Round 3 Preview
4 Mar 2010, courtesy of rabs
A quick little preview to show my appreciation of you guys. And as a small apology that this is so late.
harry_ftw v Trev
warfare, dismemberment, (soylent/bloodprison/stormkeep2)
The only match in which both players actually picked their map (good times), this should be the match of the round. Two very good players actually likely to organise a match will probably make for the game of the tournament so far. harry_ftw is on the comeback trail, and seems like he's back to his best. warfare will definitely suit him, and is something of an ideal choice against Trev's rocket and stack based technique. Trev has also picked a very good map, practically the antithesis of warfare. I think both these maps will be reasonably comfortable wins to their pickers. The decider will be very interesting, soylent clearly favouring harry_ftw, bloodprison probably slightly favouring Trev. I don't know what to think of stormkeep2, as harry_ftw can be very strong on that map, while Trev seems quite confident of a win there. I think it will probably end up being harry_ftw's day, 2-1 on an sk2 decider.
Cuinn v wayno
final_rage, campgrounds, (soylent/bloodprison/stormkeep2)
I think this match is the next closest match that is likely to be played. With 2 random maps picked it will be interesting to see how the players handle it, my prediction is with a lot of rage on campgrounds, and slightly less on final_rage. I don't think this will go to a decider, although I could be underrating Cuinn here. wayno seems to be getting back to his old form, and with final_rage and an unknown map for these two players the maps definitely favour him. He should be able to out aim and control Cuinn. This match will probably be 2-0 to wayno, both maps a margin of 5-10.
aurix v Fishman
final_rage, aggressor, (soylent/bloodprison/stormkeep2)
Charmander v bones_was_here
final_rage, aerowalk, (soylent/bloodprison/stormkeep2)
PAGEY v Viktor
UseandAbuse, dismemberment, (soylent/bloodprison/stormkeep2)
Ling v Hew
warfare, dismemberment, (soylent/bloodprison/stormkeep2)
deathdoG v rabs
UseandAbuse, final_rage, (soylent/bloodprison/stormkeep2)
MDWGUNS v kaepora gaebora
toxic, aggressor, (soylent/bloodprison/stormkeep2)
Hope you all organise your matches!
Round 2 Wrap Up
1 Mar 2010, courtesy of rabs
Round 2 of the Group Stage saw more forfeits than matches played, a sorry state of affairs for this tournament. I think we have all seen that running this form of tournament in conjunction with a team based tournament just doesn't work, though it may be in part the time of the year. However, here is what happened over the last round: HAS BEEN UPDATED AFTER REVIEWS

Group Round 1 Preview
9 Feb 2010, courtesy of rabs
Ok so, 5 out of the 16 players in the duel tourney picked a map before the deadline, and as far as I know 1 game has been organised. Things aren't looking good for the first round of Groups for this tournament. As such most of you will have a random map, which may or may not suit you. BL. Deadline to pick your map for ROUND 2 is THIS SUNDAY NIGHT AT 10 PM. Check the schedule for the deadline to play that match. This weeks decider pool is: stormkeep2, bloodprison, toxic. If a decider is required, eliminate 1 of these maps in turn, and the remaining map is the deciding map. GLHF
harry_ftw v Ling
Use&Abuse, final_rage
If harry_ftw actually has internet in time for this match, and Ling remains active and doesn't forget, this should be one of the matches of the Round. Both have random maps, which will add to the unpredictability of this match up, and with harry_ftw's extended break from the game this is Ling's best shot at an upset, possibly putting her through this group to the finals. harry_ftw cannot be discounted, as he always manages to rise to the occasion in tournament matches. I think this will be very tight, and probably go to a decider, with harry_ftw edging Ling out.
Prediction: 2-1 harry_ftw
rabs v wayno
final_rage, aggressor
The only match that I know is scheduled for sure, this should be a great game. wayno, on the comeback trail is on the improve, and looks like the dark horse for this group. rabs is one of the predicted top two finishers, and will be looking to make sure he gets away with a good start here. This should be an intriguing match up, and will probably decide 2nd, if not 1st place in this group, saddling this game with a great deal of importance. Seeing as I am playing in this match, I'm not predicting either way, but it should be a great match to watch!
Please please schedule your matches, and lets get this tourney up and running!
Duel Preview and Announcement
1 Feb 2010, courtesy of rabs
Our first every Duel Invitational will begin on the 7th of February, after which players have 2 weeks to complete each Group Match. The maplist has been voted for, and concluded at: soylent, aerowalk, stormkeep2, final_rage, warfare, toxic, aggressor, campgrounds, useandabuse, dismemberment, bloodprison. This tournament promises to be very competitive, with a lot of very good players likely to miss out on the finals. Hopefully we will get lots spectators throughout the tourney, making this the most prestigious tournament yet. Will harry_ftw be able to defend his position as the number one southern hemispheric duelist? Without further ado, my group predictions:
Group A
harry_ftw will kick his campaign off in arguably the toughest group. Obviously he will start favourite here to take top spot, but with Trev (runner up of the Fishman LAN duel tourney), Ling (a fairly mecurial player, very good on her day) and Hew (able to use rcon to kill his opposition as soon as they spawn) in the mix it will not be an easy task. The game to watch will probably be Trev v harry_ftw, but I wouldn't put it past this group to have a number of upsets.
- 1st - harry_ftw
- 2nd - Trev
- 3rd - Ling
- 4th - Hew
Group B
aurix, perhaps the most improved player since the beginning of the medley tournament will probably take top spot here, though this is another very strong group. Charmander is, I believe, the most underrated duelist, probably because he shows such disdain for the format. With Charm's mecurial nature it is not unthinkable that Fishman or bones could snag the finals berth from this group, and I fully expect great matches every week.
- 1st - aurix
- 2nd - Charmander
- 3rd - Fishman
- 4th - bones_was_here
Group C
deathdoG would have to be the favourite from this group, and one of the favourites for the tournament, after some epic duels between he and harry_ftw during the medley tournament. Clanmate rabs should be his stiffest opposition during the group stages, though this group also contains wayno (formerly one of the top Australian duelists) and Cuinnton (a fast improving player) who will be spoiling for some upsets.
- 1st - deathdoG
- 2nd - rabs
- 3rd - wayno
- 4th - Cuinnton
Group D
Group D is probably the least active group in the tournament, and with that comes a certain unpredictability. Viktor was definitely one of the best duelists early to mid last year, but with a lack of activity it remains to be seen if he still has what it takes to be a major contender. With PAGEY coming off a somewhat extended break from the game, and Kaepora and MDWGUNS just returning from long holidays it will be the player who dusts off the rust quickest who will gain a major advantage with a couple early wins. I think this group has the most potential to have major upsets, and I would not be surprised to see either of my predicted Top 2 finishing at the group stages.
- 1st - Viktor
- 2nd - MDWGUNS
- 3rd - PAGEY
- 4th - Kaepora_Gaebora
Good Luck and Have Fun to everybody, remember to select your map for the first round by the 7th of February!
